How EDDM works

You pick routes, not names

EDDM targets USPS carrier routes instead of individual addresses, so you do not need to buy or build a mailing list. You choose the ZIP Codes and the routes inside them, and every mailbox on those routes gets the piece.

Volume limits and permits

With EDDM Retail you can send at least 200 and up to 5,000 pieces per day per ZIP Code, and no special mailing permit is needed. Higher volumes run through EDDM BMEU, which does require a business mailing permit.

Postage is a flat per piece rate

EDDM pieces travel as USPS Marketing Mail flats at a published per piece rate, which is why the cost per household is usually lower than a targeted mailing. USPS publishes the current rate, and we quote postage separately from print so you can see both.

The piece has to qualify

EDDM mailers are flats, not letters, so size and thickness matter and each bundle ships with a facing slip. We set the artwork up to qualify before it goes to press, which is the step most in-house attempts get wrong.

EDDM Retail or EDDM BMEU, which one fits

Choose Retail for local saturation

Retail suits a single location trying to own the neighborhoods around it. Up to 5,000 pieces per ZIP Code per day, no permit, and the mailing is dropped at the Post Office for the selected ZIP Code.

Choose BMEU for volume

BMEU suits large volume mailers running many routes at once. It needs a permit and a Business Mail Entry Unit drop, and it is the route most multi-location and franchise programs take.

Not sure which

Tell us the footprint you want to cover and the quantity you have in mind and we will tell you which lane is cheaper for that job. It is usually obvious once the route count is on the table.

What MPress handles

Design and Artwork Setup

We build the piece to EDDM specification, including the indicia and the Postal Customer address block, so it is not turned away at the counter. EDDM mailers are flats rather than letters, so size and thickness both matter and getting them wrong is what sinks most in-house attempts.

The piece also prints through the same presses as the rest of our commercial work, which means a saturation mailer can match your brochures and signage instead of looking like a one off from a different supplier.

If artwork already exists you can upload a file and we will tell you what needs to change before it goes to press.

Bundling, Facing Slips and the Drop

EDDM has a paperwork side that surprises people. Pieces are bundled to carrier route in set counts, each bundle carries a facing slip identifying the route, and the whole mailing goes in with a completed form at the Post Office for the selected ZIP Code.

We bundle, produce the facing slips and prepare the documentation. If you would rather not touch the Post Office at all, we can handle the drop as well, so the only thing you approve is the proof.

If you need addressed mail, variable data or a donor program instead, that runs through our direct mail services.

Tell us the quantity, size, stock and deadline and we will quote it. Request a quote or call (504) 524-8248.

EDDM questions

What is Every Door Direct Mail?

Every Door Direct Mail is a USPS service that delivers a mailpiece to every address on the carrier routes you select. You choose ZIP Codes and routes rather than named recipients, which means no mailing list is required and every household on the route receives the piece.

Do I need a mailing list for EDDM?

No. That is the main reason businesses use it. EDDM targets carrier routes, so USPS delivers to every address on the route. If you need to reach specific named people or households instead, that is addressed direct mail, not EDDM.

How many pieces can I send with EDDM?

EDDM Retail allows at least 200 and up to 5,000 pieces per day per ZIP Code, and it does not require a special mailing permit. Above that, EDDM BMEU handles larger volumes but requires a business mailing permit.

How much does EDDM cost?

Cost has two parts, printing and postage. EDDM postage is a published USPS per piece rate for Marketing Mail flats, and printing depends on size, stock, and quantity. We quote the two separately so you can see what you are paying for.

What size does an EDDM piece have to be?

EDDM pieces must qualify as flats rather than letters, so they are larger and thicker than a standard postcard. We set the artwork to a qualifying size and add the required indicia and address block before printing, which avoids a rejection at the Post Office.

Can MPress drop the mailing at the Post Office for me?

Yes. We can bundle to route, produce the facing slips, prepare the paperwork, and handle the drop, so the only thing you approve is the proof.
